Inspector Montalbano's locations: the Scicli Town Hall and the seaside house at Punta Secca.
Scicli is one of the eight Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto recognised by UNESCO. Its centre, nestled between three hills, keeps a remarkable architectural unity: Via Mormina Penna, the Church of San Ignazio and the undulating façades of Palazzo Beneventano, one of the finest examples of Sicilian baroque thanks to its carved masks and balconies.
The Town Hall (Palazzo di Città) is famous for the Inspector Montalbano series, where its exterior stands in for the "Vigàta police station". Many travellers fly into Comiso precisely to follow the series' footsteps between Scicli, Ragusa Ibla and the coast.
At Punta Secca, a seafront hamlet of Santa Croce Camerina, the beach house that serves as Montalbano's home in the series is among the most photographed images, next to the lighthouse and a walk on the sand. Along the coast at Sampieri, the ruins of the Fornace Penna, a work by the architect Ernesto Basile, are another evocative place.
It is a perfect day trip: baroque in the morning, a seafood lunch by the sea and a sunset stroll.
Scicli is about 50 minutes from the airport, Punta Secca about 45. The most convenient way is a rental car or a private transfer; alternatively Tumino buses serve Punta Secca and Marina di Ragusa (check up-to-date timetables).
