The Iblean Riviera, sand and dunes

The southern coast of the province of Ragusa, facing the Strait of Sicily, is one of the few areas of the island dominated by golden-sand beaches, often backed by dunes and Mediterranean scrub. From Comiso it takes little more than half an hour: the ideal solution for those who want to combine the sea with the baroque of the hinterland.

Marina di Ragusa is the largest seaside resort, with a promenade, marina and plenty of places to eat and drink. Further west, Punta Secca with its lighthouse and Donnalucata, a still-authentic fishing village, offer a quieter atmosphere. To the east, Sampieri combines a lovely fine-sand beach with the evocative scenery of the Fornace Penna.

For nature lovers, the mouth of the Irminio river, near Marina di Ragusa, hosts a nature reserve with dunes and Mediterranean scrub: a walk between sand and vegetation, away from the beach clubs.

The swimming season runs roughly from June to September; in May and October the sea is cooler but beaches are almost empty and pleasant for walking.
