The Comiso site began as a military base: in the 1980s it hosted a NATO air base. After decommissioning it was converted to civil use and the airport opened to commercial traffic in 2013.
The airport is named after Pio La Torre (1927–1982), Sicilian politician and trade unionist killed by the mafia, who promoted the law introducing the offence of mafia-type association.
