Valletta as a day trip or a weekend in Malta: from the port of Pozzallo by fast catamaran, 50 minutes from Comiso.
The port of Pozzallo, on the southern coast of the province of Ragusa, is Sicily's main sea link with Malta. From Comiso airport it takes about 50 minutes, making it possible to combine a flight to Comiso with a trip to Malta without going through Catania or Palermo.
The link is operated by fast ferries (catamaran) in about an hour and three quarters of crossing to Valletta, with more departures in summer and reduced frequency in winter. Timetables vary by season and weather, so it is best to check and book ahead.
Valletta, the capital and a UNESCO site, is easily explored on foot: St John's Co-Cathedral with Caravaggio's famous painting "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist", the Upper Barrakka Gardens with views over the Grand Harbour, the Grand Master's Palace. With more time you can continue to the Three Cities or the fortified town of Mdina.
Documents: Malta is in the Schengen area and the eurozone, but boarding requires a valid ID (identity card or passport). Always check current requirements before travelling.
Pozzallo is about 50 minutes from Comiso airport. The most convenient way is a private transfer or a rental car; allow a buffer before the catamaran departs and check the operator's boarding procedures.
